Burn it down. Watch it grow.

A world where we burn it down, and a new scenic world grows. FIRE is a calm game for iPhone about lightning, wildfire, rain — and the garden that comes after.

How it plays.

You look down on a small world of soft, pillow-shaped squares: green grass, golden dry grass, brown scrub and blue water. Tap the land, and lightning strikes where you touched. The fire catches and runs, the wind throws sparks ahead of it, and then the storm arrives and the rain puts it out.

There are no words and no instructions. Each colour shows you what it does the first time it burns — dry grass races, scrub smoulders slowly, water stops the flames unless it is narrow enough for a spark to jump.

  • Free play — unlimited lightning, no score and no end. Just the pleasure of calling down a storm and watching the fire grow.
  • Challenge — burn enough of the land before the rain arrives, with as few strikes as you can.
  • New lightning as you go — each landscape adds one new thing, and the storm grows with it, up to a grand finale.
  • A calm evening over rows of green and golden squares, hills in the hazeCalm
  • Flames running across the squares, a wall of fire on the far terracesFire
  • Rain falling over the dark, burned landRain
  • The same land grown back: green squares with small pale flowers and tall grass plumesRegrowth
One run on the game's test ground, from the game itself. It is still in development, and the look is still being tuned.

Then it grows back — as your garden.

Fire here is not only an ending. After the rain, what burned grows back: first the silver grass, whose roots survive the fire, then small wildflowers in calm colours. What grows depends on how the land burned, so two players who strike the same way still grow two different gardens.

Your garden stays. Come back to it, fly low over it, and share a fly-over video from your iPhone.

In every valley stands a rain tree, a tree you see all over Taiwan. It never burns. It sways in the heat, and when the land grows back it blooms pink.

Questions

Is FIRE out yet?

Not yet. FIRE is in development and coming to iPhone. There is no release date and no price yet, and nothing to download today.

Which devices will it run on?

iPhone. FIRE is made for the phone in your hand: you aim with a tap and fly over your world with your fingers.

Are the landscapes real places?

They are inspired by real places in Taiwan — a lake shore, silver-grass hills, tea terraces, a river delta, a gorge — and then shaped by hand for play. They are not maps of those places.

Where is the perfect strike?

Every valley hides one perfect strike. Finding it is the secret, so we are not saying where it is.
